Update for Fräulein Rosa Martin aus Nürnberg (18) and Candida Terpin:

Frederick Sandys: Proud Maisie, 1868, pencil and crayon on paper, Victoria and Albert Museum, London

——— Sir Walter Scott:

Proud Maisie

from: The Heart of Midlothian, 1818:

Proud Maisie is in the wood,
   Walking so early;
Sweet Robin sits on the bush,
   Singing so rarely.

‚Tell me, thou bonny bird,
   When shall I marry me?’—
‚When six braw gentlemen
   Kirkward shall carry ye.‘

‚Who makes the bridal bed,
   Birdie, say truly?’—
‘The grey-headed sexton
   That delves the grave duly.

‚The glow-worm o’er grave and stone
   Shall light thee steady;
The owl from the steeple sing,—
   „Welcome, proud lady!“‚

Sandys often returned to the subject of a woman biting a lock of curling hair.

1902, black chalks on wove paper, laid down on cardboard, 39.2 cm x 33.4 cm, National Gallery of Canada:

This drawing is one of a series [of at least 11 versions, made between 1867 and 1904] representing the artist’s mistress in the pose of a brooding „femme fatale“. The title, deriving from a poem by Sir Walter Scott, was a later addition, and the image is less an illustration than the artist’s giving visual expression to his personal and provocative obsession with this individual woman.
